Mission Statement

The Push Pops are a radical, transnational queer feminist art collective. Geared toward engendering ‘Embodied Feminism,’ Go! Push Pops employs the female body – that which is bound to a cross-cultural language of desire, signification and power – in tactical, ideological strategy. Go! Push Pops utilize gesture, exclamation and popular idiom to embody a new age discursive physicality interfacing with the ancient archetypal realm. Neo-Dada, Fluxist and Feminist, their performance work posits the body as a danger to the operation of reason and patriarchal economy of lack. A wild leap, an elusive slogan, a paroxysm of the flesh – The Push Pops reinscribe the body through participatory ritual, spontaneous performance and interactive multi-media installation.

Go! Push Pops is very pleased to present a new performance work in collaboration with Natalia Yovane. With the post-hurricane commercial art world looking more like a soggy sunken treasure ship, the Push Pops are kickin' it old school with our first official Feminist Spelling B. We want to make sure you know how to spell works like 'Proto-Matriachy' the next time Nature socks the wind out of your digital insta-spell. This is a participatory event open to all feminish-identified persons (may the best Feminyst win!) Disclaimer: This performance may contain adult content! Every Lezbinist Librarian comes with a hefty dolup of freeaky biatch mayonaisse.

Feminist Spelling B is part of the evening length event 'Performance Anxiety' presented by Ventiko at the Culturefix Gallery

The push pops is happy to release!! Corpse Limb Cult

Corpse Limb Cult
Corpse Limb Cult is a durational performance filmed over several hours under the trees of Forrest Park, Queens in the summer of 2012. A Collaboration with Sharod Andrews, aka Nightcrafts Spellcraft, our beloved Cult Leader, Corpse Limb Cult is a Black Metal, Pagan, Nu-Age, Rainbow illness of an abomination. Corpse Limb Cult explores the past-future where Women are no longer fallow gardens raked over by sexism, linear intellectualism and the sheer greed of global-capitalist designs. Where we woman are the wild nature, and our earth is our matrilineal blessing, our medicine.  We are the bones, the roots and the shadow psyches.
Corpse Limb Cult was released for Go!Brooklyn 2012.

BoomBoxBoy is a collaboration between the Push Pop Collective and the artist Prince Harvey aka BoomBoxBoy. For ‘The Anniversy List,’ a multi-location exhibition in the Station North Arts District of Baltimore curated by the MICA MFA in Curatorial Practice Dept., The Push Pops joined BoomBoxBoy and led a lively tour through the exhibition.  Located in various business of the burgeoning arts district – among them a laundromat, barbershop, chicken fryer and bullet-proofed bodega where artists in the show had made unique interventions – The Push Pops posed as feminist flygirls beside the naked, uproarious spectacle of BoomBoxBoy. A community engaging initiative, ‘The Anniversary List’ project focused on building a bridge between the institution’s arts programming and the existing community of historically disenfranchised low-income African American residents.

BoomBoxBoy, influenced by the character Radio Raheem in Spike Lee’s 1989 film Do The Right Thing, is a performance work by the artist Prince Harvey exploring ownership, community, and socially appropriate modes of being with respect to race, class and gender. Incorporating personal narrative, anecdote and hip hop acapella – BoomBoxBoy’s call and response approach to rapping and beat making urges the audience to take a participatory stance embellishing the music with clapping and speaking in rhythm.

 Savoir-Faire 2012 performing artists:
GO! Push Pops  feat. Maria Jose Duran Steinman
SistersSpinderella
Thursday, September 6th, 7pm

SistersSpinderella is a Go! Push Pops performative sculpture in collaboration with Chilean artist Maria Jose Duran Steinman. Based on various mytho-spiritual lore including Native American matrilineal creation myth and Italian trance dance originating from the Greek rights of Bacchantes,  SistersSpinderella is part sculpture, part ritual, part jig.  The project references the Native American Spider Woman ‘Creator/Grandmother of the Sun’ Goddess and the correlate work of the 1970s feminist Spider Woman Theater Collective, a leading voice for indigenous women and Feminist Art. SistersSpinderella also incorporates elements of the healing trance dance known as Tarantella, a modern conception of the Baccantian dance Pizzica Tarantata (“the bite of the spider tarantula” also called “bite of love”) where the wild women followers of Bacchantes, Roman God of intoxication, become abandoned to their physical natures, literally spinning and stomping their way free of repressed sexual energy.
For this project, The Push Pops will collaborate with Maria Jose Duran Steinman, an artist whose textile based sculptures and site-specific installations pose libidinal experiences with the material and its cycles of transformation.

Maria Jose Duran, Chimera, 2010
Maria Jose Duran Steinman, b. 1982 in Chile, received BFA Fine Arts at Finis Terrae University in 2006. In 2008 she was awarded with the Fulbright Scholarship and the Chilean international Scholarship to pursuit graduate studies in NYC.
In 2010 she received her MFA Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts as well as the Alumni Scholarship award. Duran-Steinman has exhibited in Chile and New York; more recently in Perry Rubenstein Gallery, Cuchifritos Gallery, Galeria Artespacio and a solo show in NY in 2011 at the Governor’s Island Art Fair. She worked as personal assistant to Lynda Benglis during 2010 and 2011. Currently she is preparing “El Descubrimiento de America/ The Discovery of the Americas”, upcoming three-person show at Local Project in LIC for October 2012.

Go! Push Pops is proud to announce an exciting new performance work in collaboration with the AMAZING sculptor Matt Stone during the POWERPLAY Sculpture Park Opening in the Hamptons this Saturday. The piece, titled Xithinix Pangea adopts Stone’s sculpture as a type of  neo-tribal ‘totem’ within a constructed psychic terrain at once primal and galactic futurist. The performance will conclude with a music set by the thrash core ensemble Prayer Town.

welcome!!

Magic Banner, a Push Pop Collaboration with artist Ivy Castellanos, took place at the IV Soldier Gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn on March 16, 2012. Led by Castellanos as The Conductor, a ‘violent sculpture’ on stilts with a cloak of dried paint in the likeness of the American flag; the Push Pops, now a pregnant gay hood couple, sang a bilingual National Anthem against the backdrop of Magic Johnson’s 1991 press conference in which he announced that he was H.I.V. positive and would serve as a spokesperson for the disease. Magic Banner is a public proclamation calling for a new national horizon supported by conscious and humble leadership toward a greater good.

Special Thanks to Ventiko!!

Animamus Art Salon was created by Ventiko in 2011 with the mission to create a safe, supportive and inspiring environment for artists of all mediums to debut and discuss their current work while encouraging audience participation and simultaneously enabling a performance of ideas, which can not be repeated.

Animamus Salon seeks, in this digital age, to create a physical meeting space that will serve to foster the exchange of ideas, facilitate discourse, and create a sense of community.

The Push Pops screened documentation of our Yoga Hip Hop Fusion 'Bulimic Flow' and talked about our collective mission.
